Run of River Power Inc. is a Vancouver based independent producer of clean, environmentally friendly, renewable energy. The Corporation's officesare located at Suite 203 - 4840 Delta Street, Delta, BC, V4K 2T6.
Run of River Power Inc. reached a major milestone in 2005 with the
completion of its first, "run of river", Eco Logo certified,
hydroelectric generation plant at Brandywine Creek near Whistler,
British Columbia. The 7.6 MW plant is currently providing power to over
4,000 homes annually through a 20-year power purchase agreement with BC
Hydro.
The Corporation is in a period of growth in response to the tremendous need for electricity in British Columbia, North America and abroad. British Columbia currently imports in excess of 15% of its annual energy needs from other parts of Canada or from the United States. The Government of British Columbia has indicated a desire to bring the province back to energy self-sufficiency and is encouraging Independent Power Producers to develop "green" sources of domestic energy production.
"Run of River" power refers to the type of power the Corporation is primarily involved in developing; hydro-electric energy created when water is diverted from a stream through pipe to spin a turbine, which creates electricity. The water is then re-directed back onto the river further downstream. Rivers such as those found in the mountains of B.C. tend to be steep, narrow, fast flowing rivers where small turbines spin very quickly to make power.
The Corporation is developing five run-of-river project clusters totaling 691 MW of potential capacity. Two clusters (Mamquam and Upper Pitt), located in adjacent water sheds near Whistler, British Columbia will add approximately 213 MW of installed capacity with estimated gross revenues in excess of $80 million, when completed. Three development clusters located in the central BC area represents over 478 MW of additional capacity. These projects are slated for mid to long term development.
Run of River recently acquired Western Biomass Power Corp., a private company who intends to build a series of wood fired plants using pine beetle killed trees, decadent forest material as well as logging and sawmill wastes to create firm electricity. The Company has two large-scale projects under development, which include the 60 MW Tsilhqot’In power plant to be located near Williams Lake, BC and the 30 MW Suskwa power plant proposed for New Hazelton, BC.
